Of all European wagons, none quite compare with the fundamentally sporting characteristics of the Audi A4 Avant quattro. It's one of the most inspiring wagons to drive, even in stock trim-and massage in a little aftermarket craftsmanship, and the package is all the more irresistible. The appeal is clearly demonstrated by this 2002 model prepared by GMP, a longtime tuner of VAG automobiles.
The highly tuneable 1.8L turbo engine received an extra dose of horsepower via APR's Stage II Plus, which includes an ECU upgrade, larger injectors, a Hyperboost diverter valve and an APR 2.5-in. turbo back stainless-steel exhaust. According to GMP, the engine produces 225 bhp and 255 lb-ft of torque. A Neuspeed Short Shift Kit refines gear selection within the five-speed manual'box.
It's understandably difficult to improve upon the car's brilliant all-wheel-drive handling, and GMP felt it needed little more than the fitment of H&R Coilovers. Enhanced traction and style comes from a set of RH 8.5x19-in. 3-piece wheels shod with Dunlop SP9000 235/35-19 tires, while giant Stoptech 332mm binders (w/Axxis pads and stainless lines) ensure high g-force braking.
The Atlas Gray exterior panels were accentuated with a complete Oettinger body package, consisting of front, rear and side valances, color coordinated to match. The mesh in the lower front apron was also used with the Kamei grille, where color-coordinated Audi rings appropriately reside.
Factory seats with Alcantara dark gray inserts offer a slightly custom alternative to the otherwise factory cockpit. A Sony CDXMP80 AM/FM/CD/MP3 Head Unit with various JL Audio components round out the package.
GMP has been in this game for a long time and continues to develop rational, well-rounded performance cars.
