Quick Connect Parrot Bluetooth Retrofit Kit
*Recent mandatory hands-free cell phone laws in several states have left drivers scrambling for ways to comply. While doing my own research I stumbled across a website (www.parrotsafedriving.com) dedicated to informing drivers about hands-free options and the states where legislation has already been passed. The site gives detailed state-by-state information about types of offenses, restrictions, and fines that can be assessed.
While considering my own hands-free solution, I was presented with several options. First was to use the free option that came with my phone-a corded microphone and headset, which, while effective, left me feeling like a dog on a short leash. Second was an ear-mounted Bluetooth device. While devoid of any cords, it was uncomfortable (especially with sunglasses on) and constantly needed to be charged. Plus, the look didn't suit me... I looked like I was waiting for Scottie to beam me up.
So I started looking for something that could be hardwired into my 2007 GTI that would work like an optional OEM Bluetooth system, and that's when I came across the Quick Connect Bluetooth retrofit kit for late-model Volkswagen and Audi vehicles equipped with a multi-function steering wheel. The kit offers seamless integration into the factory electronics with zero modifications required to the factory wiring and no special skills or tools required to install.
What Quick Connect did was take the Parrot CK3000 Evolution, a universal hands-free Bluetooth kit, and tailored it for late-model VWs and Audis. The company developed a harness that would plug in between the factory harness and radio to get the necessary power, signal inputs and outputs. In addition to the harness, the kit includes a control box that interfaces with the factory computer to interpret command signals like volume up and down, call connect and disconnect, and a mute function, all from the buttons already present on the steering wheel. If you don't drive a VAG product, custom harnesses are available for other makes as well.
As advertised, the install was quick and painless, taking about 45 minutes, and it required the use of only two tools: a T20 Torx screwdriver and an old credit card. The hardest part was finding an acceptable location for the microphone. It's possible to install the Parrot CK3000 Evolution without the Quick Connect all-in-one cable and steering wheel control unit, but it would require cutting the factory wiring harness and installing a dash-mounted keypad. The risk of voiding your warranty over a few cut wires seems hardly worth saving a few extra bucks.
No matter how well you think you drive, the cell phone really is a distraction. A second or two of lost focus is all it takes to cause an accident. Using a Quick Connect kit may not completely eliminate the distraction of a phone conversation, but it'll allow you to keep your eyes forward and keep both hands on the wheel were they should be. -Anthony Gelinas
