The possibility of a North American Scirocco still exists. The problem is that VW isn't willing to throw away GTI sales to get it over here. There are two ways I see it working. Bring the Scirocco over under the guise of a Mk VI GTI. A smaller engine, a forced-induction 1.4 or 1.6-liter maybe and a short list of standard features-all at a great price. Or price the Scirocco near to that of a well-equipped Mk V GTI and bring the next GTI over as a smaller, cheaper car-more along the lines of a Mk I or II. Base it on a smaller world platform (since the Polo is due for an update), make it fast, affordable and fun. No matter which way it goes with GTI/Scirocco, keep the Jetta where it is and build an all-wheel-drive performance version to compete with the Impreza and Lancer.
Volkswagen will soon announce where it intends to build its new North American manufacturing facility. The location is essentially irrelevant to consumers, but the fact that it will be here means VW will be more competitive on price with models built domestically. It also shows the level of commitment the company is making to get things right. VW's new motto is 'Giving People What They Want.' It looks as if it's figuring out how to do just that-even if what we want isn't what we're asking for.
