VW will now be offering its up! city car in and an all-electric version called the e-Up!
The zero-emissions car is essentially the same as the gas version in looks and body style. The biggest difference is most obviously the large lithium-ion battery which is conveniently hidden under the floor. The battery storage capacity is 18.7 kW/h, allowing the e-up! to travel up to 93 miles on a charge. Another nice feature is that the e-up! can be recharged to 80% within a matter of 30min, allowing it to be used soon after the battery runs down.
The range is extended thanks to the vehicle's low 2612 lb weight, and while not a canyon carver, 0-60 takes a painful 14sec, reaching a top speed of 83mph. It's hardly the car for a spirited Sunday drive, but if passing gas stations sounds appealing, this electric VW would be for you if it was sold in the US, which it isn't.
The e-up! will be unveiled at the Frankfurt International Auto Show later this year.
