Today, Aston Martin confirmed that, effective immediately, the Virage will no long exist in the company’s line up. It will, however, carry over its progressive design language and interior hallmarks in the new DB9.
Perhaps the Virage looked too good for its price bracket, but whatever the reason, Aston has decided to continue its legacy into the DB9 – so rumors about the DB9’s demise can stop.
Incorporating many new design features and a host of engineering feats, the new DB9 aims to give Aston Martin customers what they demand from a luxury GT.
Sitting low and wide, the DB9 retains the Aston GT silhouette, integrating an exaggerated rear spoiler for enhanced aerodynamics.
The new DB9 tones its body lines while refining its sculpted light-catching flanks. Presenting a mature, contemporary look, the car also receives a five-vane horizontal airfoil grille inspired by the sold-out One-77 hypercar.
Aston Martin also introduces its latest version of the V12 engine. The AM11 V12 incorporates technology and performance gains developed for the Vanquish. While the motor has been tuned to meet the needs of a DB9 experience, the output comes in at 510hp (40hp more than last year) and 457 lb-ft (14 more than last year). Enhancements include a revised block, new heads, dual variable valve timing, enlarged throttle bodies, upgraded fuel pump, revised intake manifold and machined combustion chambers.
Other performance features standard on the new DB9 include Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) disc brakes (398mm front, 360mm rear) as well as six-piston front, four-piston rear calipers supplied by Brembo.
The standard wheels are 20x8.5” front and 20x11” rear wheels. It also gets the three-stage Adaptive Damping System (ADS) that can select “Normal” mode for exceptional comfort, “Sport” mode focuses on a sharper turn-in grip, while “Track” mode goes for a stiffer GT experience.
The interior carries on the tradition of Aston Martin craftsmanship and detail. Leather welting (first seen on the Virage), jewel-like glass switchgear plus optional leather headlining with detail stitching are just a few of the new features.
Items like a trunk-mounted reversing camera, rain-sensitive wipers and automatic headlights are controlled by a new panel and are standard on the DB9.
Two carbon fiber packages have been developed as well. One for the exterior; consisting of carbon fiber front splitter, rear diffuser, mirror arms, caps and tailpipes with a graphite finish. The interior package offers a carbon fiber upper fascia, gear selector paddles and door pulls.
While the appearance of an Aston Martin can distract onlookers, the engineering changes incorporate pedestrian-impact zones for the new hood and front bumper. Lowering the engine has also helped, as has a new grille construction technique that allows it to move backward on impact. As a result, the car keeps its character while preserving its chiseled appearance.
