Although it’s not been celebrated with much verve here in the US, 2012 represents the 40th anniversary of BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport.

BMW Classic decided to celebrate this important milestone at Germany’s largest classic car race at the Nürburgring, the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix, which itself was also celebrating its 40th birthday.

Topping the bill were demonstration drives by some of the famous cars and drivers associated with BMW M since 1972.

Special races were open to all BMW cars developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH since 1972, and the cars were split into relevant classes.

In addition, BMW Classic lined up five BMW racecars piloted by familiar figures. These included two BMW M1 Group 4 racers, a BMW 320 Group 5 car, a 1987 BMW M3 Group A and the 1995 BMW 320i STW. Four successful BMW touring car drivers took to the track, including Dieter Quester, Prince Leopold of Bavaria, Marc Surer and Marc Hessel all getting behind the wheel. Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice-President BMW Group Design, rounded off the roll call.
