Scooping best-in-class wins were the 1.6-liter turbo unit of the Mini John Cooper S, the four-cylinder N20 2.0L turbo engine in the new BMW 328i, the straight-six with M TwinPower Turbo of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, and the M3’s V8 made a return appearance.

The winners were selected by a panel of journalists from 36 countries and the awards were presented at the Engine Expo trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany. With these latest accolades, the BMW Group continues its winning streak, pulling in more than 50 class and overall wins since 1999. The latest title-winners span an unusually broad spectrum ranging in output from 184 to 420hp.

The 1.4-1.8-liter class handed to the Mini Cooper S was a repeat of its success last year.

The new N20 2.0-liter engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology produces 245hp and instantly won over the judges to capture the trophy in the 1.8-2.0-liter category. This engine is currently powering the new BMW 328i Sedan, BMW 528i and BMW Z4 sDrive28i, as well as the BMW X3 xDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive28i models.

BMW’s straight-six engine again took top honors (as it did in 2007 and 2008). The 3.0-litre powerplant with twin turbochargers, High Precision Injection and Double-VANOS took the overall prize in the Engine of the Year Awards. The BMW 1 Series M Coupe and the BMW TwinPower Turbo engine of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is deliver 340hp.

For the fifth time in a row, the V8 engine of the BMW M3 set the benchmark in the 3.0-4.0-liter class. The 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine with 420hp always seems to draw the judges back.
