Anyone who is into Formula One knows about KERS, the kinetic energy recovery system that everyone hated in 2009, was ditched for 2010, and is now back and giving the Red Bull team some problems in 2011. However, that has not stopped Volvo from looking into the technology and applying it to street cars. Using the name Flywheel Kinetic Energy Recovery System, or FKERS for short, this gadget is supposed to give a boost of 80 hp, making a four-cylinder engine accelerate like a V6, but save up to 20 percent in fuel consumption. The flywheel itself is carbon fiber and can spin at 60,000 rpm in a vacuum. Volvo officially says its cars may feature FKERS within a few years.
