Volkswagen T-ROC Concept SUV Details:

  • Roof halves can be manually removed and stowed
  • Cameras front and rear, supported by LED spotlights
  • Portable tablet serves as the infotainment display
  • Three driving modes: Street, Off-road and Snow

First, there was the mid-sized Touareg SUV in the early 2000s, and then came the smaller Tiguan CUV some five years or so later. Now Volkswagen is eying yet another all-new utility vehicle, and this one could be its smallest, burliest yet: the T-ROC concept.

VW will make the announcement and reveal a two-door, AWD T-ROC concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show March 4 to 16. While the design exercise portends what's on the horizon for Germany's largest carmaker, we're pretty sure some of what's on the T-ROC will never make it to production.

Actually, just one thing - the removable roof halves. The VW T-ROC concept flosses a number of crazy-cool exterior treatments, like the middle section to its roof that can be removed and stowed in the hatch to make the whip a convertible. Movable spotlights and cameras the concept is outfitted with are more likely to make the cut, the forward facing ones integrated into the fog lights and rear cams built into the reversing lights. Both sets of video inputs link to a large removable touchscreen tablet display mounted in the center console.

T-ROC concept tech doesn't end with the pull-off roof and video integration; under the hood, VW's most advanced 2.0L turbo diesel mill and 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox propel the 181hp CUV to 62mph in just under 7 seconds. As we already alluded to, the T-ROC is endowed with 4MOTION all-wheel-drive and gives drivers three different operating modes: "Street," "Off-road" and "Snow." Each mode modifies the parameters of the power train, anti-lock braking system and hill start and hill descent assist systems for the selected condition.

Concepts are as much about eye-grabbing looks as anything else, and the T-ROC does not disappoint. While the brand's SUV DNA is unmistakable, elements like the 3D radiator grille, multi-part 19-inch alloy wheels and visually prominent lower section of the front end set this ute apart. In the cabin, features are both functional and forward thinking, like the rugged, non-slip surfaces all around, low-profile dashboard, and leather trimmed steering wheel and seats. Controls, status indicators and climate control functions in the T-ROC are entirely digital and accessible through the tablet in the center console.
