2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Details:
- C300 4MATIC and C400 4MATIC introduced
- Two engine sizes: 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection in-line four-cylinder engine (235hp and 273 ft-lb) and a 3.0L turbocharged direct-injection V6 (329hp and 354 lb-ft)
- First vehicle in its segment to be fitted with air suspension on the front and rear axles
- Wheelbase increased by 3in (112in). 3.7in longer (184in) and 1.6in wider (71in), and trunk capacity increased to 17 cubic ft.
Two new C-Class models will be introduced as the C300 4Matic and C400 4Matic. Both
will incorporate technology features and styling cues from higher-end Benz models. The
new C-Class generation is aimed at customers looking for style and technology in spades
at a more reasonable price point.
The C300 is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection in-line four-cylinder
engine with a claimed 235hp and 273 ft-lb. The C400 has a 3.0L turbocharged direct-
injection V6 with a claimed 329hp and 354 lb-ft. Both are mated to a 7G-Tronic Plus
automatic transmission and a 4Matic permanent all-wheel-drive system that improves
traction and stability.
The type of brakes on the new C-Class have yet to be announced, but we know some
brake details. Adaptive Brake Assist is capable of reducing the impact of a collision from
speeds as low as 4mph, while the BAS Plus system can detect cross traffic and boost the
braking force if the driver fails to apply sufficient brake pressure. Pre-Safe Brake can
detect stationary vehicles and pedestrians, and brake for the driver if necessary.
The suspension is all-new, with a 4-link axle where the front independent suspension is
fully decoupled from the spring strut. This allows for more grip and higher lateral
stability. The optimized multi-link independent rear suspension with 5-link concept
ensures straight-line stability.
Steel suspension is standard, while two selective damping
systems are available: base suspension and a 6in lowered option as part of the Sport
Package. Mercedes says the C-Class is the first vehicle in its segment to be fitted with air
suspension (Airmatic) on the front and rear axles. The driver can use Agility Select to
choose either 'Comfort,' 'ECO,' 'Sport,' and 'Sport+' suspensions, or customize the
setting by selecting 'Individual.' Airmatic features all-round self-leveling even when the
vehicle is loaded.
Compared to its predecessor, the wheelbase of the 2015 C-Class has been increased 3in
(112in). It is also 3.7in longer (184in) and 1.6in wider (71in), while trunk capacity has
increased to 17 cubic ft.
The new C-Class has an aluminum hybrid body that is around 154 lb lighter than a
conventional steel body. Overall weight has been reduced by about 220 lb, cutting fuel
consumption by up to 20 percent while also lowering the car's center of gravity. The use
of aluminum is up to almost 50 percent compared to its predecessor, which used less than
10 percent. The passenger compartment is surrounded by specifically configured and
field-tested deformation zones combined with aluminum castings and ultra-high-strength
materials to offer more protection in the event of a collision.
The passenger compartment is set back, and short overhangs give the C-Class its defined
sedan look. Up front there is a choice of two styles: a centrally positioned star or classic
sedan radiator grille with the Mercedes star on the hood. H7 halogen headlamps are
standard and a choice of two LED lights are available: a static system or a dynamic
version with an LED Intelligent Light System that illuminates the road ahead at different
levels depending on the environment, and can even bend with the direction of the steering
wheel. The rear lamps and brake lights are LED.
The interior is entirely redesigned from previous generations, featuring a new center
console with flowing lines and a large one-piece design. A centrally positioned central
display features a 7in or 8.4in (if Multimedia Package is selected) wide screen. A
touchpad above the three central air vents lets the driver operate the head-unit functions
by entering letters, numbers and special characters by hand, in any language.
All future C-Class models will feature the electromechanical Direct Steer system as
standard. It combines road-speed-dependent power assistance from the speed-sensitive
power steering system with a steering ratio that varies according to the steering angle.
The head-up display is also new to the C-Class and displays vehicle speed, speed limits,
navigation instructions, and messages from the Distronic Plus system, which offers semi-automatic traffic jam assistance that can follow the vehicle ahead even if lane markings
Safety technology includes Attention Assist (standard), which warns the driver of
inattentiveness and drowsiness, and the COMAND system navigation function that flags
nearby break options and stopovers (if fitted in the car). Collision Prevention Assist Plus
features the ability to brake for the driver if he or she fails to respond to the danger of a
collision. Active Parking Assist offers steering and braking when in parallel or
conventional parking situations, 360-degree cameras see the vehicles surrounding from
several perspectives including bird's-eye, and Traffic Sign Assist with Wrong-Way Alert
informs the driver of speed limits and no-entry zones.
The seat belts have belt tensioning and belt force limitation for the driver. Standard
airbags include but aren't limited to pelvis bags for the driver and front passenger, newly
developed window bags, side bags for the outer rear seats, and a driver's side knee bag.
The front passenger seat is also fitted with automatic child seat recognition that
automatically deactivates the airbag.
Although pricing and availability have not been announced, the C-Class is expected to be
unveiled at the 2014 Detroit auto show in January. We predict that the all-new C300
