The Volkswagen GTI is a model known and loved around the world. Even with its fun package and all-around sporty feel, there is always room for improvement. The "Design Vision GTI" Concept offers you
just that with aggressive looks and much improved performance. The VW Concept makes its North
American debut at the 2013 LA Auto Show this week after its first official debut at Worthersee in
The "Design Vision GTI" Concept features a 3.0L V6 TSI twin-turbocharged direct-injection engine that
produces a claimed 503hp and 413 lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm with 369 lb-ft available at 2000rpm. This
concept is claimed to go from 0-62mph in 3.9sec thanks in part to a DSG dual-clutch automatic
transmission and all-wheel drive. Two three-way catalytic converters are arranged close to the engine to
optimize emissions behavior as well.
Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design of Volkswagen Brand, states: "Our claim to be a global player is enhanced
with our universal design language. A design that immediately communicates the brand's identity is
central for all models that carry the VW logo, with elements that allow each model to be recognized as a
true Volkswagen by its distinctive design."
The exterior of the Design Vision GTI resembles that of the production car while incorporating some
aggressive concept cues. The body is shorter, wider and lower than the production GTI. 0.6in shorter to
be exact (167.4in overall) thanks to a more compact rear bumper. It is also 2.2in lower (54.5in overall), and
2.8in wider (73.6in overall). Track has been increased too with the rear at 62.2in wide as compared to
the 59.7in of the production GTI. The front track is 62.8in wide in comparison to the 60.6in stock figure.
The C-pillar has been drawn outwards, while the main portion of body narrows strongly towards the
rear. This look starts right behind the front wheel with a vertical air outlet that emphasizes the waisted
doors. The sill grows outward until the upper edge merges with the C-pillar.
The Radiator grille, bottom air intake and brake cooling vents are combined with the headlights and
framed by the front fenders and hood. The grille and air inlets resemble the production GTI, while a
typical GTI red line divides the headlights, and the actual lights are set back, giving depth. The taillights
sit between the C-pillar and rear deck, which is close to the integrated spoiler; the same as production
car. The aerodynamic rear diffuser ribs and exhaust tips complete the look.
The car features the traditional GTI 'black-white-red' color scheme. The body is painted White Club,
while Piano Black is featured on the side skirts and front spoiler in addition to the red GTI badge and
strip integrated at the front end. Klaus Bischoff mentions this about the design: "The design team's brief
was to give a spectacular glance into the future of the GTI."
Tomasz Bachorski, Head of Volkswagen Interior Design comments: "Pure GTI. Concentrate on the truly
essential. But with style."
The interior features a minimalist feel with as few switches as possible. The Steering wheel features DSG
paddle shifters, drive mode selector ('Street' 'Sport' and 'Track') and a stop/start switch. The Center
console features knobs for climate control, switches for hazard lights, and activation for an on-board
camera. Under these are other controls for the electrical kill switch, push button for the fire suppression
system, and ESP deactivation.
Carbon fiber, Alacantara and Napa leather (black and red) is used throughout. The door handles are
made from a loop of red cloth like a Porsche Cup car. An X-shaped crossmember near the seat location
accentuates body stiffness.
While this is a concept, one can only hope that the impressive design elements and high horsepower
engine will be seen in the next generation GTI.
