Porsche's "there is no substitute" tagline may has just been reaffirmed in Germany. The Porsche 918 Spyder has achieved any automakers dream at the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. An incredible time of just six minutes and 57sec was achieved around the 12.8-mile ring. This shaves 14sec off the previous record. Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb held an average speed of 111.5 mph to accomplish the goal - take that in for a minute.

"We promised a great deal with the 918 Spyder, namely to redefine driving pleasure, efficiency and performance. We have kept our word," said Wolfgang Hatz, member of the Porsche AG Board of Management in charge of Research and Development.

The 3616 lb (unladen with Weissach package) 918 Spyder is powered by three sources: a naturally aspirated 4.6L V8 engine that produces 608hp and 398 lb-ft, 154hp hybrid module on the rear axle and a 127hp electric motor on the front axle. These three powerplants combine to make a total output of 887hp and 590+ lb-ft of torque depending on the power mode, rpm range and gear. When utilizing 7th gear, the maximum torque rating calculated on the crankshaft reaches 940 lb-ft, according to Porsche. A 7-speed PDK gearbox powers this 918 Spyder allowing it to reach 0-62mph in 2.7sec. In electric mode, the 918 Spyder reaches 62mph from 0 in 6.9sec.

"The radical hybridization of the 918 Spyder from the very outset is what made this lap record possible" said Dr. Frank Walliser, head of the 918 Spyder project. "The lap time on the Nordschleife is and remains the toughest measure of a super sports car. Posting a time of 6 minutes and 57sec, we achieved a result of which everyone in the development team and at Porsche as a whole is rightly proud."

We wonder how the German automaker will one-up itself next. Whatever it is, we can't wait to see.
