The all-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC (all-wheel drive) is claimed to be the most powerful
high-performance sedan in the luxury segment and a quick glance at the spec sheet backs that up.
Available in the U.S. come November 2013, a range of revisions from all-new aggressive styling to
significant weight savings over the predecessor rings in a new year for this go-fast luxury sedan. Under
the hood is a hand-built AMG 5.5 liter V8 biturbo engine cranking out 577 hp and 664 lb-ft (compared to
the 2013 S63 AMG's 536 hp and 590 lb-ft, according to MBUSA). All this power is driven through the
AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission.
0-60 time is quite impressive for a car of its size coming in at 3.9 seconds compared to the 4.4 of its
predecessor or the claimed 4.8 seconds of the standard 2014 S550. This new Benz is also claimed to
reach a top speed of 186 mph (electronically limited).
While the AMG 4MATIC has most of the same creature comforts as the outgoing model including the
Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), and Manual (M) modes, worked through the 7-speed transmission,
the new air suspension adds even more comfort to the S-class feel. This is of course a luxury sedan first
even though it puts down serious power figures. Also new to the AMG 4MATIC is the continuous
damping adjustment, which aims for better adaptation to road-surface conditions. This is proven
through the 4MATIC (all-wheel drive) system. Aiding in control and acceleration that will outmatch some
much smaller sports cars is the lighter package. As stated by a recent Motor Trend article on the subject
(found here), "With the car's aluminum construction and lighter-weight lithium-ion battery helping
shave pounds, we wonder whether the 2014 S63 AMG will feel more nimble than before."
Compared to its heavier predecessor, this AMG 4MATIC has shed weight in many places that also
include the forged light-alloy wheels, AMG high-performance two-piece brake system, and spare wheel
recess made of carbon fiber. All of this, surrounded by the new lightweight aluminum shell, rings in 220
pounds of weight savings, according to Mercedes-Benz. We can't wait to see how these performance
measures stack up in the real world and possibly on a canyon road amidst "testing" procedures.
To the exterior, the luxury sedan received a sportier front and rear end to highlight its new performance
attributes. The well-to-do crowd interested in the new AMG 4MATIC will also notice a change in
headlight styling and the three front air dams. And just like at the front, the rear taillights are presented
in a sportier fashion along with the more curved shape of the rear. To ensure all those in traffic know
exactly what you are wielding, the rear lettering reads 'V8 Biturbo' and 'S63 AMG' with new
The interior is what you would expect from an S-Class Benz. With plush heated or cooled AMG sport
seats, the driver and passengers are treated to the finest nappa leather, full adjustability and a hot stone
massage function as standard. Sporty shift paddles and AMG steering wheel remind you that you are
driving something special.
While pricing has not been announced, we can imagine it will come with an MSRP a bit higher than the
current S63 AMG's price tag of $140,000. For those born with a heavy foot but set on extreme luxury,
the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC looks to walk the line of serene rideability and performance
that will put the fear of God in speed-phobic passengers. Enticing, indeed.
