From the start of the 2014 season, Mercedes-Benz will supply the Williams F1 team with engines to
power its racecars. The motor will also include the Energy Recovery System supplied by Mercedes AMG
High Performance Powertrains.
Although Williams will use the new AMG engines, they will continue to use their own transmission.
With new regulations looming, engineers have their hands full trying to meet the new fuel tank rules.
The current 330 lb tanks will be shrunk to 220 lb to complete the race without refueling.
The teams will also swap from the current naturally aspirated 2.4-liter V8 engines to much smaller 1.6-
liter V6 turbocharged hybrid units.
To increase the performance of the small motors, the Energy Recovery System (ERS) will produce ten
times more energy than the current KERS system. Power for the new ERS will be recovered through the
exhaust turbine and rear axle.
The new technical advances will provide opportunities for real world application from F1 to areas such
as battery technology, turbocharging, energy recovery and combustion efficiency.
