Despite leaving the German DTM race series in 1992, BMW made a spectacular return in 2012 by winning the Driver's championship with Bruno Spengler, plus the team and manufacturer's titles after BMW won half the races that year.
For the start of the 2013 season, BMW seems to have picked up where it left off, with Brazilian driver Augusto Farfus winning the opening race at Hockenheim at the wheel of his Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM. This was his second race win for the team following victory last year in Valencia.
Second place went to Dirk Werner driving for BMW Team Schnitzer, who started 20th on the grid but finished behind Farfus in his Samsung-sponsored M3 DTM.
This was the first one-two finish for BMW since it returned to the DTM in 2012, but the 16th time BMW drivers have managed it in its DTM history.
Reigning champion Bruno Spengler crossed the finish line fifth in the BMW Bank M3 DTM, with Joey Hand and Marco Wittmann also finishing in the points, placed seventh and ninth respectively.
With five BMW M3 DTM drivers in the top ten, Martin Tomczyk and Andy Priaulx finished 13th and 17th, with new boy Timo Glock working his way up to second before problems with a wheel during a pitstop forced him to retire.
