First Look: 2003 Volvo XC90
|
The XC90's Haldex awd system, as first seen on the S60 AWD sedan, is lighter and quicker than the previous viscous-coupling setup. It normally sends up to 95% of the engine's torque to the front wheels. If it senses front-wheel slip, it can transfer up to 100% of the power to the rear axle. It also works in concert with TRACS, which distributes power between the left and right wheels, and DSTC, an anti-skid system (top) which applies brakes and controls engine torque to reduce the vehicle's tendency to skid. Along with a unique anti-roll system, this makes the XC90 remarkably stable. View Related Article
