The ability to engage Launch Control might be worth the extra cost simply for sheer entertainment factor. Engaging Sport Plus at a dead stop, you stand on the brake pedal with your left foot while revving to redline with your right. Dump the brakes, and the car explodesyeah, I said itoff the line with hysterical force. We first experienced Launch Control in the all-wheel-drive 911 C4 and Turbo models, but the purely rear-drive GTS seems just as willing to hook up with little, if any, wheelspin involved. And the thing will do it all day long. Launch until your knees turn watery, panic brake to a halt, do it all over again. It never gets old.

But better still, the Carrera GTS is undeniably Porsche 911 in all phases of driving. Sharp, well-weighted and communicative steering; a taut ride that inspires essentially flat cornering; and an altogether ergonomically sound operational experience that defines all 911 models; easily modulated brakes that can stand up to incredible punishment; all combined with an even more tractable engine that offers adequate forward thrust at just about any engine speed make the 911 GTS

Well, what the hell can you say? It’s suitably awesome. You basically never want to shut it off and leave your seatuntil a German communications rep threatens you with bodily harm.

So we didn’t. I was just griping about the arrow-straight highway run back to Palm Springs when my co-driver turned to me. We should go back up Montezuma, he said with a grin. I’m cool with it if you are. I was, and we did.

So while we wait
