BMW X3, New Yet Familiar

Fast Forward Bmw X3
Fast Forward Bmw X3

This is the new generation BMW X3. It looks pretty similar to the first-gen X3, but since that vehicle was a big seller for BMW, why get too radical? Just a welcome bit of post-Bangle softness creeping into a body that's three inches longer, just over an inch wider, and about half an inch higher. Engine-wise, things take the usual BMW course: a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter straight six making 240 hp and 230 lb-ft in the xDrive28i, or a turbocharged version good for 300 hp and 300 lb-ft in the xDrive35i. Both are brilliant enough to turn even a crossover into a driver's car, especially when paired with BMW's (well, ZF's) excellent eight-speed automatic transmission. Featuring full-time all-wheel drive, the system has a 40:60 front-to-rear split for a more traditional BMW driving experience, although it can shift torque around according to conditions. No word on prices yet, but options will include the head-up display, Internet access, and an M Sport cosmetic package. It goes on sale some time in 2011.
