Here it is, then: the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, a bigger, all-new model (generation six). Looks as if it can give the Japanese and the Focus a bit of stiff competition, since it offers a spacious package that rivals might struggle to match. VW is claiming best-in-class rear legroom with 38.1 inches and an advantageous starting price of $16,000, about $1,700 less than the outgoing model. On top of that, it will enjoy various VW goodies everyone has come to know and love, like a six-speed DSG transmission and a lusty 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine that churns out 236 lb-ft of torque in an eerily quiet and emissions-friendly way. The new car is based not on a Golf platform as per usual, but bespoke underpinnings. Its increased size might even win it some buyers from the bracket above, the Accord and Camry crowd. We wish it well, even if the needle on our Whelm Meter is nudging toward Under.
