Drivers... who needs 'em? Not Mercedes-Benz. The company has been working on installing "robots" into several of its cars to oversee steering, acceleration, and braking. The mechanical muscle is flexed by an on-board computer. A pre-programmed course can be followed exactly, down to every last little parameter like how much steering lock or what distance to maintain behind another vehicle. Running the same course several times, the tracks will vary from one another by less than an inch. When coming to a stop, a robot Benz will repeatedly hit a spot within an area of three inches. The company states that all Mercedes-Benz models can be equipped for automated driving. The main point is to enhance current safety systems and help the driver in extreme circumstances. But once the tech is in place, it might sometimes be tempting to take a nap in the back seat and let the machines deal with the commute.
