When the Fiat 500 subcompact comes out in North America next year, it will be based on a newer platform than the European version. Call it "Ford Focus Syndrome" in reverse. Since the company has to tool up a whole new operation in Mexico anyway, it doesn't have to use the old platform. Version 2.0 offers better crash protection with less noise, vibration, and harshness. An all-electric version is set to go on sale in North America in 2012.
