The new AJ-V8
Gen III powerplant
The XF's 5.0-liter V8 engine is all-new; the only carryover parts from the old 4.2-liter are the exhaust valve lifters and the cylinder head bolts. Paul Crawford, whose long history at Jaguar has included work on the V12s and the previous AJ engine, explains that the GEN III engine project was largely independent of Ford's direction. "The only requirement was that the cylinder head bolts would line up with those of the Mustang V8, so you could put these heads on a Mustang," Crawford says. Given the impressive power and torque figures, the engine is quite compact-24mm shorter than its predecessor-despite having a broad range of high technology enhancements. It uses direct fuel injection that delivers juice at more than 2,200 psi into the combustion chamber. Variable camshaft timing, variable camshaft lift, and a variable intake manifold all combine to improve both performance and fuel efficiency. The XFR uses a sixth-generation Eaton twin-vortex supercharger system with a pair of water-cooled intercoolers, all of which are packaged into the engine block vee. The result is 23 percent more horsepower and 12 percent more torque compared with its supercharged 4.2-liter predecessor, with no loss in fuel economy or increase in emissions.
