First Look: 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate
Driving dynamics have been greatly enhanced in the new E-Class Estate. The front suspension is now a four-link setup instead of the previous double wishbone. Two separate links take over from the lower wishbone and provide better axle kinematics and more precise location of the wheels. Other components include coil springs and single-tube shocks and a stabilizer bar. Still to be found at the rear axle is the familiar multi-link system, but now aluminum replaces the steel previously used, saving over 30% of the system's weight. The axle carrier now is also aluminum, further aiding savings in unsprung weight. Gas-pressure shocks and a stabilizer bar are used alongside the standard-fit level control on the rear axle.
