First Look: VW Touareg
|
Touaregs with the air suspension have adjustable ride height, shock valving and drivetrain settings; all can be manually operated by easily read and operated dials (above right), and graphics in the gauge cluster monitor the selections (above left). The range of ride heights includes a loading level of 6.3 in.; a stage 1 high-speed setting, up to 78 mph, of 7.5 in.; a stage 2 high-speed setting of 7.1 in., up to 112 mph; a standard, street-use setting of 8.5 in.; and two off-road levels: 9. in. of clearance up to 44 mph and 11.8 in. at the highest setting, which can be used up to 12 mph. The sophisticated underpinnings allow side-hill angles of up to 45 degrees to be handled safely. Combined with short front and rear overhangs, the Touareg offers competitive approach and depart angles and climbing ability. It's a genuine off-roader. View Related Article
