The tuner's stage three engine package has also been utilized and includes a larger Mitsubishi 18t turbocharger, ipd/MTE ECU, TME three-inch downpipe and sport exhaust. Boost levels have been raised from 9.7 psi to a heady 14.5 psi; while this could spell disaster for many engines, the Volvo's powerplant was designed to be force-fed.

By itself, ipd's stage three is good for 285 hp (from stock 236) and 290 lb-ft of torque (from stock 243). The company continued Volvo's development with an R-spec exhaust manifold, a reverse-flow intercooler kit and an Aquamist water/methanol injection system. Unlike more modern turbo systems, this takes a while to spool up. However, when its larger turbo unleashes (at 3700 rpm) you'd best have a firm grip on the steering wheel. Its powerband hits like a hammer and continues until 6600 rpm.

In addition to bold graphics and screaming red paint, ipd fitted an R-spec front bumper cap that flows into a color-coded ipd grille. The tail is crowned with an Oingal rear hatch spoiler, a rather understated piece of aerodynamic kit.

This car loves to stretch its legs and deserted pieces of freeway see it breaching ridiculous speed. Its inherently good aerodynamics make it a bullet-train of a vehicle, both smooth and quiet.

It's not bad on the twisties, either, although the smooth leather seats don't hold backsides very well. It takes skill to keep up with the S40, but that's part of this car's appeal. Keep the powerband in the boost and it's seriously quick.

"V70s have gotten very affordable," says ipd's Scott Hart. "Five to seven grand can put you in a great car, one we can build up according to fairly stringent budgets."
