Audi A5, S5
Minus Two, Plus One
Audi's B8 chassis debuted at Geneva with two doors, rather than four, in the new A5 and S5. One key feature is what the company calls modulare lngsplattform, or MLP, which will make electronics, axle, drivetrain and suspension modules interchangeable across the model range. In addition to the A5 and S5, MLP will support the new A4, A6 and A8, as well as the forthcoming A5 convertible. Audi claims MLP also offers dynamic advantages. The engine and gearbox are moved backward, toward the firewall, effectively creating a front-mid layout, shortening the front overhang and improving weight distribution. There's also a new five-link suspension up front and a reengineered rack-and-pinion steering system. AWD models will additionally feature the next stage in Quattro's evolution, which features a 40/60 standard torque split. The new system can vary drive force not only from the front axle to the rear and vice versa, but also side-to-side between wheels for greater handling prowess. Initially, the standard engine in the A5 will be the 3.2-liter V6, while the S5 will receive the 4.2-liter V8. We can't wait to sneak behind the wheel of both.
