The garage doesn't only house the car anymore. It's become the ultimate hangout room, the place to entertain, share collections, and experience the passions of its owners. Just ask custom installer Bill Anderson of Genesis Audio & Video and interior designer Joyce Goldstein. They are responsible for this incredible car-guy's dream garage.
I've seen a lot of impressive garages over the years, some with tile floors, scissor lifts, wet bars, and flat panel TVs. One even had a built-in car wash, and although many are larger and perhaps even more elaborate, it's hard to imagine wanting anything more in a garage than this.
Owned by a vintage Porsche enthusiast and all-around motorhead, what once was a typical Southern California three-car garage is now the ultimate car-guy retreat.
"It was important to keep the garage functional, as well as maintain a garage feel and not be too esoteric," says Goldstein. "The '62 Porsche, which happens to be an authentic Carrera 2 Rally car (valued at $280,000) was our centerpiece and design inspiration. We just worked our away around it and everything sort of fell together."
Understandably, the big buzz about the project, which was built as a design showcase of sorts pertains to its custom home, or shall I say Garage Theater?
The setup is located in the rear quarter of the garage and designed to perfection. In fact, the theater won Orange County's Philharmonic House of Design last year, in addition to being voted Best Special Project by CEDIA.
The system features a state-of-the-art projection unit with a large Stewart Filmscreen FireHawk screen with surround sound via dual 1,000-watt Revel Ultima Sub 30 subwoofers, Revel Ultima Studio towers, as well as tucked-away rear channel units. Did I mention the entire audio/video system is touch-screen activated?
Guests can watch their favorite car flick while comfortably seated in custom leather Recaro theater chairs by Dynamic Autosports. Just as cool, you can place your drink on a reclaimed chrome and powdercoated floor jack morphed into the base of a glass top coffee table. You can't buy that at Sears.
A black curtain envelopes the front half of the theater, making it nice and cozy and further creating a true theater atmosphere. Popcorn, anyone? A nearby concrete-top bar (not shown, with one-off bar stools made from Porsche wheels) keeps snacks and your beverage of choice within easy reach. The bar and adjacent display cabinets (also not shown) built by California Closets are full of miscellaneous auto-related collectibles.
If you tire of watching Le Mans for the umpteenth time, there's plenty of eye candy at virtually every corner. Aside from the Porsche and a '38 Indian motorcycle, the garage is littered with all sorts of Porsche memorabilia, such as racing flags, trophies, and awards. There's also a vintage Mobil gas pump and a giant wall-sized framed original movie poster of Winning starring Paul Newman.
Silver, red, and black snap-and-lock RaceDeck squares cover the entire garage floor. The colors and diamond pattern theme are also mirrored in the theater's custom-made rug.
The main parking stall and surrounding area is designed as a functioning workshop, complete with diamond-plate stainless steel-faced storage cabinetry, tool storage, a matching fridge, and workbench from Gladiator GarageWorks. The surrounding walls are covered with similar stainless steel panels. Incidentally, all of the walls, including the ceiling and the garage doors are heavily insulated for sound-deadening. This includes the installation of a hand-beveled acoustic ceiling by theater designer Trayce Layngle of LBI/Boyd. The primary door also features a mural appropriately of a European street scene. The artwork is custom-painted by Eloise Lunde and extends across the ceiling to the theater.
As stated, larger and possibly more elaborate places to house your car and/or car collection do exist, but chances are you've never seen one equipped with its own Garage Theater, let alone one quite as unique as this.
Editor's note: If you feel you have a garage worthy of the title Garage Mahal, or you know someone who does and would like to see it featured on these pages, feel free to submit sample photography at www.europeancarweb.com.
