1984 Audi Ur-Quattro - Re-born Ur-Quattro

During the all-too-brief 3 years the Ur-Quattro was imported to the U.S. (1983-85), fewer than 700 examples made it to our shores. With only 65 total units shipped during the 1984 model year and 73 the year after, its limited-production status was guaranteed.

Back in the day the masculine Ur-Quattro, also known as the turbo Quattro Coupe, was the ultimate in performance straight from the showroom floor. The car-which bore a passing resemblance to the standard Audi Coupe GT-offered out-of-the-box excitement with stronger power, bolder looks and state-of-the-art technology, including all-wheel-drive prowess that was second to none. Sadly, the car garnered relatively little attention stateside, save for the enthusiast media and Audi Quattro aficionados.

One such Quattrophile is Chris Kopitzke, the proprietor of Fast Enough Performance in Lexington, Ky.

If anyone has ever had a persistent preoccupation (see above definition of obsession) with the Quattro-and VW and Audis in general-it would definitely be Kopitzke (say "ko-pit-skee"). In addition to this excessively modified '84 Ur-Quattro, the guy currently owns five other similar rides, including a turbocharged 20-valve Audi 90, a turbocharged 16-valve '81 Scirocco S and two '88 Rallye Golfs (yes, two).

The Ur-Quattro (loosely translated as "original" Quattro) was purchased as a theft recovery, having been stolen, stripped and burned. Reduced to a shell, Kopitzke meticulously re-assembled the car using a variety of shared parts from VW and Audi donor cars, including a 2.5-liter Eurovan short block. The heavily modified engine and five-speed transmission is secured using custom-made engine and transmission mounts.

Tightly suspended, the car now rides on H&R springs and Koni externally adjustable shocks. Custom aluminum subframe bushings and custom Delron A-arm bushings were also used.

Braking duties are performed by Brembo six-piston GT-3 calipers and super-sized 13-in. drilled and slotted rotors at the front, with Audi V8 10.1-in. units handling the rear.

The Ur-Quattro's prominent fenders are nicely filled with a set of BBS RXII 8.5x18 wheels, shod with Dunlop 225/40-18 tires.

The interior is equal parts 4000 Quattro and Coupe GT, including carpet, panels, dash and all Quattro control systems. An '88 Jetta GLI 16V provided a stellar pair of factory Recaros, while a MOMO three-spoke steering wheel and leather-wrapped shift knob finish the spiffing up.

Originally factory rated with a top speed of 128 mph, Kopitzke's 480-bhp (at the wheels) ride easily reaches this number within a mere 1/4-mile sprint. Equally mind numbing is the consistent and remarkable low-11-sec. e.t.

Obviously, Kopitzke's obsession has more than paid off.
