The other evening I was driving home from the office in some other car. It was still light out, and traffic was moving pretty good. I was humming along at my usual 80 mph, when I noticed a red M3 convertible, just like our silver tester, moving up on me quickly. I found myself watching him in my mirror, admiring the car's nose as it grew larger. You've got to love those wheelwell flares and that power bulge on the hood.
Anyway, when the guy flew by, top up, I remember thinking, "Man, that must be how cool I look when I'm driving the M3."
The interior is also very much to my liking. Well laid out. Void of gimmicks. Nicely put together. I really like the way the H-pattern on top of the shifter lights up red at night, and I've never felt softer leather on a steering wheel. I've even found the back seat to be usable for one adult if the trip is short. Try that in a 911.
Our silver test car has also proven reliable over the most recent stretch of use. We had one slight electronic glitch with the onboard tire pressure warning light, which illuminates on the instrument cluster if a tire has gone low. Although our tires were pumped up to spec, the light remained on for weeks. Then, it miraculously went out and never returned.
Flaws? I think the lumbar in the drivers seat should be adjustable. I also think a car that costs this much should have a glass rear window. And those wheels never look good for long, thanks to the notorious BMW brake dust.
There's really nothing else to complain about here. This is a very special car. Maybe I'll own one someday. The day after I buy a 1987 Buick GNX.
