If you have a 510hp Range Rover Sport and still can’t get the kids to soccer practice on time, the new Sport SVR might just be what you need. It’s the first Range Rover to wear the new SVR badge of Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations Team. Apparently SVO is still the property of Ford. It will also be the most powerful Range Rover ever produced with its 5.0 liter supercharged V8 producing 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque.

The development of the Sport SVR wasn’t just focused on straight-line performance. John Edwards, Managing Director of Land Rover Special Operations, said: “The Range Rover Sport SVR is a natural progression beyond the core vehicle’s outstanding on- and off-road capabilities and leading-edge design. It’s exhilarating performance will satisfy a particularly demanding customer set.” That performance is possible thanks to a front dual control arm and rear multi-link suspension setup constructed mostly of aluminum. Spring rate and ride height adjustability is provided by air-springs while damping is continuously variable thanks to magnetorheological shocks that are adjusted based on 500hz sampling of vehicle feedback and driver input. Range Rover insists that neither ride quality nor off-road ability have been sacrificed with the more aggressive tuning. The SVR can still lower 2-inches or raise up to 9.3-inches off of standard ride height. It also maintains the standard SUV’s 10.2-inches front and 10.7-inch rear suspension travel.
SVR engineers have also retuned the Active-Roll Control system to optimize handling. Range Rover’s newest iteration of ARC uses hydraulic actuators at each corner to provide adjustable roll-rate depending on conditions. Independent control allows for not only the ability to change roll, but handling balance front to rear. Although the SVR’s performance control maps have been recalibrated, it uses the standard Sport’s maps for off-roading.
Development of the SVR took place around the fabled and now compulsory, Nürburgring Nordschleife. The Range Rover Sport SVR will reportedly lap the Green Hell in a very sports car like 8 minutes 14 seconds. The time is particualry impressive for a 5200 lb SUV capable of running a lap and then taking the family camping. To put that lap time into perspective, a stock e46 M3 generally runs a little over 8 minutes 20 seconds.
Since 2005, over 500,000 Range Rover Sports have been sold. With a starting price of $110,475 there is no doubt the SVR will be just as successful.
