BMW will be offering a 4 Series four-door sedan, the Gran Coupe (GC), now that the two-door coupe is out – launched last June – probably isn’t all that surprising, considering the lineup is effectively supplanting what was the 3 Series. We already know the 4 can be sporty with two egresses; now with the Gran Coupe, BMW is saying, “Hey, look – the 4 can do utility, too!”

For the American market, the 4 Gran Coupe will be available in two engine choices, a 240hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the 428i and a 300hp turbo 3.0-liter inline six in the 435i. There also looks to be an all-wheel drive version coming, the 428i xDrive GC, and all versions will be offered with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission.

While the GC shares the same length, width, wheelbase and track with the as two-door version, the roofline is 4.4 inches longer and slopes gently to the rear of the vehicle; the profile is also half an inch higher.

Luxury Line Gran Coupes get instead chrome highlights, going for classy rather than sinister; premium leather, crafted with precise stitching, is available in four classic and elegant colors such as Saddle Brown, as well as the new Ivory White that is exclusive to the 4 Series GC.

The 4 Series GC will be offered in two “Lines” or as an M Sport machine. In Sport Line, the car comes with a bunch of blacked-out exterior trim pieces supplemented by 18-inch or 19-inch light-alloy wheels with a double-spoke design. Red accents on the interior provide some contrast.

Of course, you know we’re all about the M Sport offering, which injects some M Performance DNA into the 4 Series GC. This equipment package is comprised of elements that emphasize street performance – for example, aerodynamic features like the large air intake up front, the diffuser insert in the rear bumper and rocker panel trim matching the color of the vehicle.

In M Sport trim, the cars also feature 18- and 19-inch rims and are offered in six exterior colors. Technical features of this package include M Sport suspension and the optional M Sport brakes with calipers in contrasting blue paint finish. Inside, M qualities abound, such as door sill finishers, a leather steering wheel and driver’s footrest.

Prices in the US will start at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $41,225 for the 428i Gran Coupe. The 428i xDrive Gran Coupe will have an MSRP of $43,225, while the top-of-the-line 435i Gran Coupe will have an MSRP of $46,725. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe makes its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014 and makes its US debut at the New York International Auto Show in April. The car goes on sale in the US in early summer.
