Abt Audi A4 1.8Ti
The Abt family has been involved in motorsports and aftermarket products for years. There is potential in the Audi A4 1.8T with it's 20mm lower suspension and wider alloy wheels. The extroverted Abt body-styling kit is comprised of a new front bumper/spoiler featuring bigger air intakes, a small carbon air splitter and vertical boundary "wings" on each side--somewhat like the ones on the Porsche 911 GT2. The rear bumper/valence has a semi-circular incision made into it for the twin exhaust rear silencer and the rear wing sits on the edge of the trunk and houses a high-level brake light.
The sports suspension drops the car 30mm over standard and it rides on five-spoke 8J and 8.5Jx17-in Abt alloy wheels shod with 215/45ZR17 and 235/40ZR17 rubber.
The 1.8Ti has a modified turbo, larger intercooler and rechipped ECU for an output of 193 bhp. The average 1.8T has 155 lb-ft of torque between 1750 and 4600 rpm but the Abt version has 197.8 lb-ft at 3900 rpm and 162 lb-ft at 1650 rpm. In front-wheel-drive form (there is a quattro option), the Abt A4 1.8Ti will get to 60 mph in 7.8 sec. and top speed is 144 mph, which is a limit imposed by the gearing.
This is the V1 conversion but the V2 conversion is only recommended for the quattro option. In the V2 form, Abt uses technology inspired by the GT racing cars to make 250 bhp plus, employing a bigger turbo, new manifold, extensive headwork and a more highly-modified ECU.
The A4 pulled much harder than standard but retained the smoothness of the basic engine. Its throttle response was keener, its top-end breathing ability noticeably better. With the standard suspension, this car has more grip than its engine can overcome. With the uprated suspension and wheel package, the chassis is even further ahead of the modified engine. Thankfully the ride quality has not suffered too much, and the car now has a pleasant tautness to it and less roll, not that this was a problem to start with.
The midrange acceleration in this car is very impressive. With such a plateau of torque available from low down in the rev band in a relatively light car, the V2 version feels like it has a 4.0-liter V8 under the hood. If only it had the soundtrack to match!
